Student Lap Tracker collects the minimum a school running program needs: a student’s name, runner ID, class, and the laps, distance and times the program generates. That data is used only to run your school’s program. There is no advertising, no selling, and no sharing with third parties without your school’s consent. The barcode or QR code on a student’s ID card encodes only the runner ID, a number that means nothing outside your school’s account. Data is protected with modern encryption, and access is limited to accounts your school creates: staff you authorize, and optional family dashboards that show one student’s own data and nothing else. There is no self-registration.
COPPA, in One Paragraph
The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act governs online collection of personal information from children under 13. It requires verifiable consent, limits collection to what a service needs, and restricts using children’s data for advertising or profiling. In the school context, schools may consent on parents’ behalf for educational tools. Student Lap Tracker is built for that model: minimal collection, school-controlled consent and access, and no advertising or profiling of any kind.
FERPA, in One Paragraph
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act gives parents (and later, students) rights over education records and restricts schools from disclosing them without consent. Vendors may handle records as a “school official” with a legitimate educational interest, under the school’s direct control, for the contracted purpose only. That is our arrangement: the school owns its records, we process them solely to provide lap tracking and reporting, and disclosure goes only to the school and the accounts it authorizes.
California AB 1584, in One Paragraph
AB 1584 (Education Code §49073.1) sets contract requirements for California districts whose vendors handle pupil records: the district retains ownership and control of records, the vendor may not use records beyond the contracted purpose, and contracts must address parent access, data security and deletion. Student Lap Tracker’s standard practice matches those requirements: district ownership, single-purpose processing, family visibility through dashboards, and deletion on request.

A: Yes. Schools act as the provider of consent for their students' use of the system, we collect only the minimal data needed to operate the program, we never use student data for advertising or profiling, and parents can review their child's data through school-controlled dashboard accounts.

A: Yes. We operate as a school official with a legitimate educational interest under FERPA's framework: the school owns its student records, we process them only to provide the service, and data is disclosed only to the school and the accounts it authorizes.
Q: How do we request deletion of student data?
A: Contact us. Schools own their data: we delete student records at the school's request, and you can export your data from the Web Portal at any time. When a school leaves the service, its student data is not kept for any other purpose, because there is no other purpose we use it for.
