Starting a run club or running club is a great way to increase physical activity and improve fitness at your elementary school. Make it fun for the kids, make it easy for the teachers and recognize student achievement using an award or reward system.

10 steps to start an elementary school running club

  1. Get administrative support
  2. Find a committed staff coordinator
  3. Choose a time for running
  4. Set your distance goals and award levels
  5. Decide on your awards / recognition program
  6. Recruit parent or student volunteers
  7. Set up a lap tracking system
  8. Make it fun and engaging
  9. Communicate with parents
  10. Celebrate success!

Get Administrative Support

To really make a dent in getting kids more active, you need staff buy in across the school. That starts with the principal who needs to be invested and a champion for the program. The PE teacher is also a key piece of the puzzle as well as any interested classroom teachers who are willing to bring their class out for running. Finally, you need parent volunteers to help manage the running activity during the sessions.

Choose a Time for Running

The most common times for running are before school, at recess, and at lunch. Many schools also run during PE class. Before school is typically the easiest since there are limited competing activities. Recess is also very popular but you may have to negotiate use of the playground space with the recess duty supervisor.

Set Your Distance Goals and Award Levels

Most schools set goals in increments of 5-10 miles and award small prizes (pencils, stickers, bookmarks) at each level. A popular format is to track towards a big goal like 100 miles with periodic rewards along the way. You want to make it achievable for beginners but also keep higher goals to challenge more active students.

Decide on Awards and Recognition

Recognition is a huge motivator. Hang posters or banners in the hallway. Post results on the school website. Announce top runners over the intercom. Give out ribbons, medals, or certificates at school assemblies. Kids respond incredibly well to even small amounts of public recognition.

Recruit Volunteers

Parent volunteers are the backbone of a successful running club. You will need at minimum one adult per 30-40 students during running time. Create clear volunteer roles so people know exactly what they are signing up for.

Set Up a Lap Tracking System

The tracking system you use will determine how easily you can manage the program. The most common methods are:

  • Tally marks – simple but time consuming and prone to error
  • Popsicle sticks – easy but hard to manage for large groups
  • Barcode/QR code scanning – accurate and fast, works well for any size school

Student Lap Tracker uses Barcode/QR code scanning and is designed specifically for school running clubs. Students are assigned barcodes (often printed on lanyards or ID cards) that are scanned by a parent volunteer after each lap using a tablet or phone. This eliminates human error and generates instant, printable reports.

Make it Fun!

Theme runs are very popular. Try a color run, costume day, or fundraiser run to keep energy and interest high throughout the year. Let students set personal goals and check their progress. Nothing motivates kids like seeing their own data!
