Student Lap Tracker is a subscription lap-tracking system for K–12 schools that uses iOS and Android scanner apps and barcode or QR student ID cards to count laps, track distance, and time runs.
It replaces tally sheets, popsicle sticks and evenings spent in a spreadsheet. Students run with their ID card and a teacher or volunteer scans it at the finish line. Every lap becomes a named, timestamped record in your school’s Web Portal, and that record feeds distance totals, awards, timed-run history and school-branded reports automatically.
Schools outside the United States pay a flat $99 USD per year — every feature included, any enrollment size.
GET CUSTOM QUOTEHow the Lap Counter App Works
1. Students Run
Each student carries a laminated ID card with a barcode, printed at your school and reused all year. There are no wearables or electronics and nothing to charge.
2. You Scan
The scanner app turns any iPhone, iPad or Android device into a lap counter. Point the camera at a passing card and the app beeps, shows the student’s information and logs the lap, online or offline.
3. Reports Are Ready
Scans sync to the Web Portal automatically. Distance, awards and school-branded reports are ready before the class is back inside. Nobody counts laps, does the distance math or types in data.

How a School Lap Counter Differs from a Tally App
Any free counter app can count laps. A school program also needs to know whose laps they are: which student, which class, which award they just earned, and which parent gets to see it. That requirement shows up throughout the feature list:
| Generic counter app | Student Lap Tracker | |
|---|---|---|
| Counts laps | Group total only | Per student, per class, per grade, per activity |
| Student history | None | Cumulative laps, distance and times all year |
| Awards | — | Automatic award levels + printable certificates |
| Reports | — | Unlimited, school-branded, export to Excel/Word/PDF |
| Timed runs | Stopwatch at best | Whole-class timing with per-lap splits and trends |
| Family access | — | Unlimited parent/student dashboard accounts |
| Privacy compliance | Unknown | COPPA, FERPA, AB1584 |
| Works offline | Varies | Yes — scans sync when a connection returns |
What the Scanner Apps Can Do
- iOS and Android — unlimited devices, no per-device fees. You use the phones and tablets your school already has.
- Works offline — scans save on the device and sync automatically when a connection comes back. Fields with no wifi are common and fully supported.
- Fast — each scan takes a fraction of a second, with the student’s information confirmed on screen. Two or three devices handle a whole grade at once.
- Timed or untimed — run everyday lap sessions, or timed races with group starts, finish times and per-lap splits.
- Event-ready — devices are unlimited, so a big jog-a-thon finish line can run 5–10 stations at once.

Lap Counter App FAQ
Q: Is there a free lap counter app for schools?
A: Free generic tally and lap counter apps exist, and they work for counting one group's total laps. They do not track individual students, so there is no roster, no accumulating distance, no awards, no reports, no family access, and no student privacy compliance. Schools that start with a free counter typically run into those limits within a few weeks of running a real program.
Q: What does the Student Lap Tracker subscription include?
A: The subscription includes the iOS and Android scanner apps on unlimited devices, the Web Portal, unlimited scans and reports, timed runs with splits, the awards engine, family dashboard accounts, free setup (we import your class lists) and email support. Pricing details are on the pricing page.
Q: Does the lap counter app work without wifi?
A: Yes. The scanner apps store every scan on the device and work with no connection at all. Fields, tracks and gyms with no wifi are common, and the app is built for them. When the device later finds a connection, scans sync to the Web Portal automatically, so nothing is lost and nobody has to remember to upload.
Q: How many devices can scan at the same time?
A: As many as you need. Subscriptions include unlimited devices with no per-device fees. A daily PE class usually runs one or two scanners. A jog-a-thon finish line can run five to ten side by side.
Q: What do students carry to be scanned?
A: A printed, laminated ID card with their name, runner ID and a barcode or QR code. There are no electronics or wearables, and nothing to charge or pair. Cards are printed at school from the Web Portal, cost very little, last a full school year, and are reused year over year.
Q: What's the difference between a tally counter app and a school lap tracker?
A: A tally counter records that a lap happened. A school lap tracker records which student ran it. Attaching each lap to a named student on a school roster is what makes cumulative distance, award levels, class and grade reports, timed run history and parent dashboards possible, and it is also what requires real privacy compliance. The roster is what separates the two.
